Features and Remarks
Already in Jeppe Lauge’s first works around 2010 we find several levels in which figuration and abstraction come together in one painting grid-like. From 2015 onwards, nature is reflected as the main theme in his paintings - nature as antithesis of culture and the difficulty of distinguishing the two from each other.
Jeppe Lauge’s recent works often show a disturbed motif. With our digital image memory, his paintings sometimes appear as if an image file is defective or a display on a screen is not yet visible in full resolution. Jeppe Lauge says that for him landscape is only a metaphor for underlying content that is detached from the subject. The metaphor of a disturbed view on our natural environment is a highly topical and explosive theme of our present.

Jeppe Lauge was born in 1980 in East Jutland. Lauge studied at the Academy of Arts in Århus and Ærø, before moving to Amsterdam in 2008, where he studied Fine Arts from 2008 to 2011 at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Jeppe Lauge's paintings mostly looks for the big format. In his paintings, he brings together images of nature and geometrical forms and patterns in a congenial way. In the interplay of forms, this results in a space, or a landscape that can exist only in the human mind. At the same time, the pictures also refer to the conditions of human culture, especially our time. They reflect the way we shape our environment and are shaped by it ourselves. The images do not only deal with the romantic or aesthetic cultivation of the sublimity of nature, but with a mediated nature, in which realism and geometrical abstractions together form a completely new composition. Leach has already had a number of solo exhibitions and since 2007 numerous participations in group exhibitions in Denmark, France and the Netherlands. Most recently, his work was shown in 2017 in Luxembourg at the presentation of the finalists of the Luxembourg Art Prize 2017. The artist lives and works in Amsterdam. |
