Lambert Maria Wintersberger

Lambert Maria Wintersberger was born in Munich in 1941. He began his career as an artist in 1958 as a decorative painter, church painter, glass painter and mosaicist. In 1961 he attended the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence and completed his studies in Italy in 1964. Wintersberger then moved to the divided city of Berlin as a freelance artist, where he and fellow artists founded the self-help gallery Berliner Künstler, named after the address Großgörschenstraße 35, in a former factory floor in Berlin-Schöneberg. The group Großgörschen 35 existed from 1964 to 1968.

Wintersberger was honoured with Munich's Burda Prize in 1968 and left Berlin. He moved to Stuttgart and the following year received the prize for painting at the 6th Biennale of Youth in Paris and moved to Cologne. But not much later he moved on: from 1971 to 1972 he continued his work in the USA. From 1974 to 1977 he returned to Germany and took up a teaching post at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. From 1980 to 1985 he went back to Stuttgart and finally to Walbourg in Alsace, where he settled for the long term. He is the 1992 laureate of the Centre Européen d'Actions Artistique Contemporaines in Strasbourg.

Lambert Maria Wintersberger lived and worked in Walbourg (France) in an old railway station converted into a residence and studio until his death in 2013.

Lambert Maria Wintersberger founded together with Markus Lüpertz, Karl Horst Hödicke, Bernd Koberling and others the Großgörschen 35 group in Berlin. It is considered one of the first so-called "producer galleries" and had a model character.
