Beyond the ideal

Marius Seidlitz

is the first artist from Chemnitz to join the gallery's program. His first solo exhibition also marks the next step in the development of his work. Over the past year, Seidlitz has explored the portrait in depth as a mirror of our ideas about identity, memory, and staging. His black, high-gloss faces refuse any individual legibility and become projection surfaces for the viewer's gaze. For the exhibition in Chemnitz, the artist consistently carries this inquiry further. For the first time, the body itself takes center stage. The starting point is the classical pictorial tradition of the Renaissance — in particular Michelangelo's monumental figures. Yet Seidlitz does not adopt their ideals; he questions them. The heroic bodies remain, while the heads dissolve into black, reflective forms. Personality disappears, identity stays open.

Between art-historical quotation and contemporary visual language, a field of tension emerges in which questions of physicality, self-image, and social projection are renegotiated. The flawless surface is at once alluring and unapproachable; it reflects light without granting insight. What becomes visible is less an individual than the void that each act of viewing fills with its own ideas.

The exhibition is complemented by a site-specific, temporary work that Marius Seidlitz develops directly within the gallery spaces. The wall drawing extends his visual world into the room, and the two spheres enter into a dialogue that blurs the boundaries between work, space, and viewer.
