In the “Trophy Wives” series, Seejarim combines traditional antler boards for game with their typical shield-like edge as carriers of her very own “trophies”.
Symbolizing the colloquial “Trophy Wife” - the wife at the side of the successful man, reduced only to her outward appearance - she assembles curved iron bases into various flower shapes symbolizing a vulva. Thus the hunter's trophies are also of a physical nature in Seejarim's work, only not venison or antlers, but secondary female sexual characteristics.
Usha Seejarim creates installations and works that are both minimalist and sculptural, often dealing with indentured labor and exploitation, functionality and domesticity. With fine conceptual sensitivity, she transforms everyday household objects into particularly aesthetic works of art. With these works, she explores, among other things, the conditions or harsh circumstances of the daily work of the less privileged in her home country South Africa. But it is also about the use and value of tools and the daily rituals of the household.

Usha Seejarim wurde 1974 in Bethal, Südafrika, geboren. Seejarim erwarb 2008 einen Master in Bildender Kunst von der University of The Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, Südafrika, wo sie derzeit lebt und arbeitet. Die Künstlerin arbeitet vor allem konzeptionell und auch sozial engagiert. Mit ihren Neuinterpretationen von gewöhnlichen Haushaltsgenständen versinnbildlicht sie die häusliche Stellung der Frau. Ihre Arbeiten, bei denen sie alltägliche Materialien wie Sicherheitsnadeln, Holzpflöcke, Bügeleisen und Besen verwendet, haben einen deutlich dadaistischen Einfluss. Ihre Kompositionen resultieren aus sich wiederholenden Zeichenhandlungen, die auf Themen wie Zeit, Zufall, Raum und Verschiebung anspielen. Seejarim war 2018 Preisträgerin des renommierten Dak'Art Biennale Sculpture Prize in Dakar, Senegal und Gewinnerin des Tomorrow's/Today Prize auf der Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2018 in Kapstadt, Südafrika. Die Arbeiten der Künstlerin werden international ausgestellt und befinden sich in wichtigen öffentlichen Sammlungen. |
