Features and Remarks
While one level of the paintings presents the scenery to the viewer in clearly realistic painting, a more abstract version of the same motif, which can be grasped more structurally, is pushed across the canvas at the same time and level. Seeing the paintings thus first and foremost becomes a search.
The search for focus, for stability, for recognition, for clarity. A few cognitive processes later, or with a little distance from the surface of the painting, the subjective perception of what is seen is revealed, which, reminiscent of Rohschach paintings, differs from individual to individual. Do we all see the same thing? Is what you see more valid than what the other person sees? The technical finesse with which Jeppe Lauge applies the colour to the raw canvas in an orchestrated process visualises the artist's meticulous approach to painting.
His compositions are well thought out and precisely realised.
It is only at the very end of the creative process that Jeppe Lauge's unbridled desire for colour makes its way onto the canvas. We find thick paint applied to the edges of the picture or thick splashes of colour over the layers of the picture. This powerful materiality, which is dripped and splashed onto the canvas wildly and randomly as a counterpoint, creates a third, deeper level in the paintings.

Jeppe Lauge was born in 1980 in East Jutland. Lauge studied at the Academy of Arts in Århus and Ærø, before moving to Amsterdam in 2008, where he studied Fine Arts from 2008 to 2011 at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Jeppe Lauge's paintings mostly looks for the big format. In his paintings, he brings together images of nature and geometrical forms and patterns in a congenial way. In the interplay of forms, this results in a space, or a landscape that can exist only in the human mind. At the same time, the pictures also refer to the conditions of human culture, especially our time. They reflect the way we shape our environment and are shaped by it ourselves. The images do not only deal with the romantic or aesthetic cultivation of the sublimity of nature, but with a mediated nature, in which realism and geometrical abstractions together form a completely new composition. Leach has already had a number of solo exhibitions and since 2007 numerous participations in group exhibitions in Denmark, France and the Netherlands. Most recently, his work was shown in 2017 in Luxembourg at the presentation of the finalists of the Luxembourg Art Prize 2017. The artist lives and works in Amsterdam. |
